About The Position

Senior Implementation Consultant – Card Payments


We are seeking an experienced Senior Implementation Consultant with deep expertise in traditional card payments and Visa/Mastercard implementation programs.

In this role, you will support complex customer implementations with a strong focus on card issuing, transaction lifecycle management, network-to-bank message flows, clearing and settlement, integrations, APIs, testing, troubleshooting, and production readiness.

You will act as a functional and technical Subject Matter Expert (SME), partnering directly with customers and internal teams to drive successful delivery across implementation, certification, go-live, and post-production stabilization activities.

This is a highly specialized cards domain role. Candidates must bring hands-on experience working within traditional card payments environments such as issuer processing, acquiring, payment switches, card management platforms, fintechs, processors, or banking technology organizations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead customer-facing implementation discussions for Visa and Mastercard card payment programs.
  • Act as a card payments SME across implementation, testing, operational readiness, certification, and go-live workstreams.
  • Define and validate end-to-end transaction flows between card networks, issuers, processors, payment switches, APIs, and downstream banking platforms.
  • Support implementation activities across:
  • Authorization
  • Clearing & settlement
  • Reconciliation
  • Disputes and chargebacks
  • Exception handling
  • Transaction lifecycle processing
  • Translate business and technical requirements into:
  • Implementation plans
  • Integration requirements
  • Configuration activities
  • API mappings
  • Test scenarios
  • Support API integrations, message mapping, field mapping, transaction validation, and error handling workflows.
  • Partner with product, engineering, security, compliance, operations, and external vendor teams to ensure successful delivery.
  • Support SIT, UAT, certification testing, regression testing, production validation, cutover, go-live, and hypercare activities.
  • Troubleshoot implementation and production issues through:
  • Log analysis
  • Transaction tracing
  • API response analysis
  • Message payload reviews
  • Error and response code analysis
  • Identify delivery risks, integration issues, operational gaps, and implementation dependencies, while driving mitigation plans.
  • Advise customers on best practices and standard card processing behaviors while avoiding unnecessary legacy replication.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve implementation methodologies, documentation standards, and delivery practices.

Required Experience

  • 7+ years of experience within payments, banking technology, card processing, fintech, acquiring, or issuer processing environments.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience implementing traditional card payment solutions involving Visa and/or Mastercard ecosystems.
  • Strong experience supporting card issuing, processor migration, payment platform modernization, or card platform implementation programs.
  • Deep understanding of the end-to-end card transaction lifecycle, including:
  • Authorization
  • Clearing
  • Settlement
  • Reversals
  • Refunds
  • Reconciliation
  • Chargebacks/disputes
  • Experience working with banks, issuers, processors, payment switches, card networks, or fintech organizations.
  • Ability to lead customer workshops across business, technology, operations, and compliance stakeholders.

  • Strong documentation and implementation governance experience.

Required Card Payments Knowledge

  • Visa and/or Mastercard transaction processing and implementation practices.
  • Network-to-bank and bank-to-network message flows.
  • Authorization flows, declines, reversals, refunds, response handling, and exception processing.
  • Clearing, settlement, posting, reconciliation, fees, disputes, and operational processes.
  • BIN setup, card product configuration, transaction rules, limits, and processing parameters.
  • Payment message structures, response codes, transaction statuses, and failure scenarios.
  • Scheme testing, certification activities, and production readiness processes.

Technical & Integration Skills

  • Strong understanding of API integrations, authentication, request/response handling, and error management.
  • Experience with:
  • Data mapping
  • Message mapping
  • Transaction trace analysis
  • Test data validation
  • Issue triage
  • Ability to analyze logs, API responses, dashboards, and observability outputs for troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Understanding of PCI-related security controls, encryption, tokenization, and secure data handling practices.
  • Comfortable working within cloud-native, SaaS, API-driven, and microservices-based financial technology environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ISO 8583 or similar payment messaging standards.
  • Background with issuer processors, payment switches, card management systems, or core banking platforms.
  • Experience supporting Visa or Mastercard certification and network testing processes.
  • Experience with processor replacement, ledger migration, or large-scale payment transformation initiatives.
  • Exposure to fraud, AML, risk monitoring, or dispute management platforms connected to card payment systems.
  • Experience working across European markets and distributed global teams.
  • Previous consulting, implementation, or solution advisory experience within financial services.
